Growing up homeschooled in Southern California, Shelley Couvillion's interest in the relationship between words and pictures started young. Shelley loved to listen to her mother read books aloud about all manner of things, from The Seals of Antarctica to The Little House on the Prairie. Her parents fostered her interest in art by letting her draw almost any time and anywhere.
Shelley grew up a tomboy and has always struggled with two seemingly opposite pulls in her life: wanting to be kick-butt, but also wanting (secretly) to be a lady. Now that she is a mom, she’s decided there’s nothing wrong with being both, and she wants her daughter to grow up in a culture where being kick-butt and a girl aren’t mutually exclusive.
Her work is inquisitive, layered and often described as precise. Her characters are geometric but lively, while her environments inspire a longing to explore.
Shelley has since joined The Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, has done work for Disney and shows her work in the local galleries. She is pursuing work as an illustrator for children’s books and magazines with Lupine Grove Creative.
Currently Shelley lives in Los Angeles with her husband, daughter, and houseplants Chaz and Tiberius.
